This is happening all across the country, and spreading fast. There are people who can pay their mortgage, but are choosing to stop paying because their home value has dropped dramatically. This is called Strategic Defaulting.
If you are a Christian, this is not an option. Psalm 37:21 says
The wicked borrow and do not repay,
but the righteous give generously;
