I found these stats on money interesting so I thought id share.
Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
- In 1915, the average yearly family income in the USA was $687.00
- In 1776, a man with $4,000 was considered to be wealthy (I’d feel wealthy today If I had this much cash lol).
- One-fourth of the worlds population lives on less than $200 a year.
- Ninety million people survive on less than $75 a year!
- The average US family spends $1,174 a year on gambling. (I spend $0 I don’t buy lottery tickets).
America is still a great place to live. We have it good here despite all our countries problems. We really can reduce our spending and live on less than we currently do, and still survive. It’s just a matter of changing bad habits.

Nice reality check. I often think about this when I listen to the news and hear about people grumbling due to a lack of the EXCESS money they feel they are deserved, or find myself wishing I had a bit more to pay off that much more of my loans, or to get that new car 1 year sooner. Always a good idea to keep in mind how blessed the U.S. is.
I think the one that surprised me the most was the average American family spending $1174 a year on gambling. That is about $100 a month. I just never guessed it would be that much!
Joe, Those gambling numbers are likely higher now. They came from a book I have dated 1983.

Wow that is so crazy. I don’t ever gamble, nor do any of my friends or family. I can’t believe that number is so high!
I use to buy lottery tickets years ago, but I never spent that much. I don’t play at all now. Odds are against you winning any substantial amount. I see all the poor and/or uneducated folks in the lotto line each morning when I stop to get my bagel (mostly blue collar workers and senior citizens, the majority of which are minorities.) They have no clue that they are ruining themselves financially. The government sponsored lotteries are aimed at these people.
I make bets on football games with friends, every football season and do fantasy football with money. However, all said I usually about break even.
