Every blog has one it seems. A post about getting rich or wealthy. So here is my post on becoming rich. Dave Ramsey says it best. Normal in North America is broke. Your goal is to not be normal.
So, how come you are not rich? Here are a few of the likely causes:
- You are living way beyond your means. That is, you are spending more than you should spend. Buying things you don’t need. In short, you are a Stuff-a-holic. Material things are more important to you than they should be.
- You probably have car payment(s).
- You probably have too much credit card debt.
- You have a house payment and it’s probably higher than you can afford.
- You have too many monthly bills or payments for things you can live without. Cell phones, magazine or other subscription based services that you can live without, video rentals, etc. The small bills matter, they add up over time.
- You are saving very little if any money on payday.
- You don’t give money to charity, church, or to help others (I feel that giving plays a role in your financial health).
- You work for someone else. If you are working a JOB for an employer, you may never accumulate any wealth. You need to become your own boss to control your financial future. Either a business owner, or self employed. Of course being a business owner or self employed is not for everyone.
- You don’t shop around for lower prices before you buy things.
- You don’t know how to handle your cash. You hit the ATM all the time and poof… the money is gone and you have no idea where it went.
- Bonus tip: You could be in the wrong job or a low paying job. In that case, you need to work on improving your education and job skills.
- Bonus tip: Taxes. Lets face it, Lots of your income goes to fund the stupidity in Washington. Taxes are high and getting even higher.
- Bonus tip: Being rich is really not a good goal to have. Find a better goal.
As a side note, I don’t want you to be rich. But I don’t want you to be broke either. Somewhere in the middle is a perfect balance.

I like #1 and #10. Although, I love he goal of being “rich”. I have my own definition, which I strive for everyday. It’s fun!
Thanks for taking the time to comment.
I don’t read Ramsey, not because I don’t like his kool-aid, it’s just because I never got around to it. Most likely, someday I will…
The only real weakness/fault I have is #8… I’ll have to work on that sometime soon!
