Living in a 89 square foot home

Talk about being frugal. No rent, no mortgage payment. $100 bucks a year spent on utilities. This is cool. I could see myself doing this someday. Great idea.

See the yahoo video

Could you do this? Downsize to something this small? Why or why not? It’s size is a mere 8 by 12 feet!

Questions I have:

  • How do you heat it?
  • How do you cool it?
  • How does the toilet work?
  • Do you have running water?
  • Does it have electricity? How do you cook?
  • Where do you keep it if you don’t own property?

  • Wow that’s awesome. He really made that place look nice, I’d love to see what it was actually like for me on the inside. Those are great questions… It looked like that was public water he was getting….

  • Pretty cool, if you want to live alone. I can’t see me raising a family of 4 in one though.

Although they don’t mention it, it still cost money to build it. I think it might be cheaper just to rent a room from someone (via an newspaper add or relative).

I does have an appeal though, especially if I were single…

  • Yes, family of 4 would be tough… a bit cramped. I think the small ones were $48,000… still a lot of money in my book.

    Arthur,

I had the same questions you did. This might be OK for Jay, but I think I would go stir crazy.

  • Arthur,
I left the last comment without giving my blog site. I am trying this one with my site, just to see if I am still being blocked. I hope you don’t mind me using your site for experimentation.

  • I don’t mind Joe. I think it’s blocked you before. Not sure why. I check the spam folder every few days in case there is something there that is not spam.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

  • I love the cuteness and look of these tiny homes, but Mr. BFS and I need more space. I don’t think he’s appreciate listening to the X-Files while working on grad school classes and we board game with friends…I’d never be able to host a party again. :-(

Nope, cute, but not for me. :-)

  • 89 sq feet is pretty small. They have bigger ones up to 837 sq feet… that would be more my style.

    Thanks for commenting. :)

There’s a woman who built her own tiny house from salvaged materials for about $7000. She based it on Jay’s design. The price you mentioned may be the pre-made ones with all the extras.

There’s quite a community of small house people out there with some pretty cool solutions. If the idea of stream lined living strikes your fancy, check out the possiblities to see if any fit your needs.
